THEY improv has often been hired by oil and gas clients to help make their presentations “less boring.” While much of their jargon is foreign to many, their needs were very straight-forward and serious and I have been able to use my knowledge and experience in the industry to benefit our clients.

While working for our clients I was able to get a greater understanding of the industry and began studying the statistics of accidents and mortality on rigs and at land-based wells. I became concerned and returned to take classes at Nicholls State University, a leader in safety training for the oil and gas industry. This helped me to better understand their language and to further help our oil & gas clients and bring additional value to prospective companies that had yet to work with us.

This knowledge allowed THEY improv to improve our oil and gas safety programs. While the price of oil may fluctuate, the physical needs for safety remain or paramount importance. Safety can’t be ignored, even when fiscal conditions are poor. Wells can blow in many different ways and often the “rough necks” are the first line of defense. One daydream on the job can mean loss of equipment or worse, loss of life on the job.

The different status levels and ages of workers on rigs can also affect adherence to company protocol. In our work, I frequently hear about older or more experienced workers disregarding company safety protocol because they can’t be bothered and don’t want to have to listen to newer workers. One walk under a loaded crane may be all it takes to lose a life. We cannot be anything but vigilant. I’ve never met a manager who doesn’t dread making a call to a family of a worker who has been terribly hurt.

At THEY improv, we work with rough necks through middle and upper management to ensure that safety protocol isn’t boring, and is adhered to. Sometimes we customize programs involving repeated visits with your team over a year. We may use accountability partners so that teams have accountability to each other. There is great success in that. We can customize a 24 hour help line specifically for your team.

Sometimes we have companies ask us to teach their teams to “listen to the well.” What that really involves is listening to other members of the team, and never letting down our guard when it comes to a well that can become volatile very quickly.

The moving parts of an oil and gas well involve a “well-oiled” machine that is a team devoid of ego, where occasionally leadership may be fluid. That means that in a disaster, we do whatever works!

While each company’s safety protocol may be somewhat different, what never changes is the desire and need to keep workers safe and protect company assets.

I’m proud to say that THEY improv has helped countless companies to achieve those goals and they sometimes even involve discounts in their insurance!
